why learn?

I feel like I’ve come to a bit of uncharted territory for myself - the question of “why value learning?” Is learning itself enough to keep you going, or is there a purpose for the knowledge and skills you acquire? Why do we tell kids to be lifelong learners and encourage students to love learning more than grades? Perhaps it’s the accumulation of knowledge without it translating into action that gets to me. The development of how to think mostly for the sake of congratulating yourself and without that ability benefiting others. The superiority that the learned feel over the unlearned, or even one subject over another. Being “interested” in something just to show that you can write an elaborate paper… testing your ability to write papers. You can keep your head above pure grade-grubbing with lofty ideas of higher learning, but the meaning of life remains to be grasped, and school isn’t going to give that to you.
